From a Vision to a Global Movement: Celebrating the Inaugural World Decarbonization Day
What began as a passionate conversation among three visionary women in a small room in Victoria Island, Lagos, has now sparked a global call to action. Dr. Ola Duniowo, National President of Women in Energy, Oil and Gas (WEOG), delivered a stirring virtual address marking the first-ever World Decarbonization Day (WDD)—a day dedicated to transitioning the world toward a low-carbon future.
Born out of a need to address the challenges of climate change—especially those originating from the energy, oil, and gas industries—WDD was conceived to raise awareness, ignite collaboration, and mobilize innovation across all sectors of society. The day, observed every September 3rd, now stands as a unifying global platform for governments, industries, and individuals to accelerate decarbonization efforts.
A Foundation Built on Action
World Decarbonization Day is not just symbolic—it’s solution-driven. With early announcements made in Houston, Abuja, and Lagos, the global launch was supported by national ministries, energy stakeholders, and advocates across the climate sector.
Dr. Duniowo highlighted key upcoming initiatives that define WDD’s practical impact:
- Projects focused on carbon capture, storage, and reduction
- Expansion of renewable energy systems like solar, wind, hydrogen, and atomic energy
- Multisectoral collaboration to decarbonize core emitters and foster inclusive innovation
